We reached a pretty important milestone – Ethan’s first birthday! I thought it would be useful to share some photos and ideas on how we created a stress-free and stylish first birthday party!
first birthday party decoration ideas
As in my recent post – How to plan and style a Christening – we started party planning by choosing a colour scheme – we chose monochrome, silver and gold, which was in-keeping with the festive time of year too.
Where to buy first birthday party decorations
We bought this lovely garland and fans in TK Maxx – they are by Sheffield Home.
Then, we simply pulled bits from around the house to compliment the decorations – a couple of white photo frames, gold and silver stags, a silver candle jar and iridescent and black glassware on a vintage silver tray.
Inside the frames we put a picture of Ethan when he was born and one of his lovely birthday cards.
First birthday cake ideas
I baked (yes, really) a maple syrup and pecan three layer cake – it was super moist and delicious – the recipe is by The Hummingbird bakery and can be found here. I made the ribbon toppers – similar ones can be found on Etsy. The gold glittery “one” was bought from Inspired By Alma on Etsy. The gold patterned napkins were a supermarket bargain (Aldi).
Creating a stress-free first birthday party
My philosophy on planning any event is to have as much fun as possible – avoid as much stress as you can.
1. Ask for help! Whether that means asking someone to be in charge of drinks or asking them to pick up the balloons for you – remember you’re not alone.
2. Simplify the food – pick one easy food option that everyone can eat – chunky soup or a chilli for example, or simply buy it in – events are the most absurd time to show off your domestic goddess skills – you should sit back and enjoy the party!
3. Get organised – I really mean this – you wont enjoy your day as much if you spend half of it wrapping presents, putting up bunting and icing a cake!
