10 classic pieces for your wardrobe
After dashing around the shops this January sale period, I’ve decided this year, it’s all about maximising investment pieces. This means classic pieces that wash well, are well-made, versatile, and MOST importantly do not date.
So here is our list of the top ten classic must haves for your wardrobe – if you’re going to invest in fashion this year – let it be on these timeless pieces!
1 – A Trench coat
En vogue since the 1800s, with unrivalled versatility, a trench coat is as a trans-seasonal staple which everyone should own. Dress it up for smarter occasions, or throw on with your favourite trainers and ripped jeans to deliver ultimate style. This article by Marie Claire has some great inspiration. Camel and grey colours are most versatile.
2 – An iconic leather bag
Some brands come and go – invest in an iconic one. Choose a classic style that will not date. Also make sure it’s not too big or too small (and fits your favourite purse) so will be as versatile as possible – The Stylist magazine pulled a great list together for you – find it here.
Here’s Charlotte with the Chanel classic flap bag.
3 – A leather biker jacket
The jacket that suits everyone, is effortlessly cool and as sexy as hell. Every woman should own one. All Saints, Topshop and Reiss can be relied on for classic styles like the ones below.
4 – A beautiful pair of stilettos
Wedding? Cocktail hour? Interview? You’re sorted. You’ll never regret investing in a classic pair of black stiletto heels – don’t buy online – try them on in the shop and make sure you can comfortably walk in them. Get them re-healed, keep them in their box – take care of them and they’ll love you forever.
5 – A leather purse in your favourite colour
This must fit coins with a zip, flat notes and at least 10 cards . Why? Because every time you take it out of your bag to pay, it will make you smile – even if you’re in your sweat pants with dirty hair, paying for petrol/gas. Choose a colour that won’t mark easily – definitely not white!
6 – A pair of quality denim jeans
To give the illusion of longer, slim legs (and to not be flashing your underwear each time you sit down) go for a slightly high-rise, skinny-leg style. Stick to a true blue wash that will go with everything, every season.
7 – A machine washable, easy iron, loose fitting black dress
Basically, if you try one of these that suits you, you need to buy it. Avoid fabrics that don’t wash easily – let’s face it, who has time to be traipsing back and forth to a dry cleaner? Avoid appliques or complicated pleats that need ironing and above all, pick something you still feel comfortable in when you’ve eaten a big meal. If you’re uncomfortable in what you’re wearing it shows, so ignore the size tag and focus on it fitting your real shape.
8 – A white and a denim shirt in a classic cut
Timeless and versatile, these two chameleons will see you through from work to the weekend – add a chunky necklace and leather look pants for dinner out, or a pencil skirt and court shoes for smarter occasions. You’ll never go wrong with these – make sure buttons and stitching are good quality too as these are more obvious on a plain item such as this.
9 – A pleated skirt
Graceful and more versatile than you’d think, pleated skirts continue to feature in catwalks year after year. Throw on some heels and a cute jacket and your sorted for a wedding, add a shirt and transform into work-wear, add a jumper and pumps and elevate your weekend brunch to style central. This Harpers Bazarr feature has some lovely pleated skirt options to inspire you.
10 – Aviator glasses
The master of sunglasses since the 1930s – they basically suit everyone and punctuate any look into “Who me? stylish? oh be quiet!”.
